Screen Room Systems

Are bugs keeping you in and away from enjoying the great outdoors?

Heartlands is pleased to provide the same great quality products we put in each of our custom screen rooms directly to you or your contractor on an installed or non-installed basis.

Our standard screen system goes beyond the competitors roll formed economical 1” by 1” pre-finished tube. While the 1” by 1” rolled formed tube is commercially available and used by Heartlands on an exception basis, our standard is extruded aluminum channels and columns custom finished to your color selection on a project-by-project basis.

We learned early on the factory paint finish acceptable to our competitors did not meet our quality standards and what our customers truly want; and, in many cases, necessary color choices were not available. The stronger system -- custom powder coat paint finish, flat vs. round spline -- and our standard and more durable “pool and patio” screen mesh supports Heartlands' contention that we are clearly the best.

Heartlands offers an option for a picket rail system integrated and built into our extruded upper and lower screen railing components. The round pickets are installed on 4” centers to at least building code standards and at your desired height. For new construction, an integrated rail system is normally more economical than a separate railing system.

In addition, the integrated systems provides a clean, finished look and is also available in any one of hundreds of colors. Unlike the competition, Heartlands pickets are extruded aluminum vs. the competitors' lower-cost rolled and bent pickets. We encourage you to compare!

We work closely with homeowners, architects, builders and contractors to design a screen enclosure that fits the customer’s needs based on their exposure to the sun, privacy requirements and security issues. Whether the design includes arched tops, brick columns, recessed areas for the screen channels or individual screen sections in excess of 20’ wide, we have done it all. In addition, we introduced retractable screen systems for outdoor living areas back when the competition said it could not be done! Today, they are trying to catch up.

If the budget allows, please consider a fully retractable screen room. Heartlands has designed and installed retractable screen rooms on many of the finest homes in the St. Louis area and has been contracted to provide design, product and installation support for projects in Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

We install -- custom building each system on-site -- in a manner to minimize disruption to you and other subcontractors, if any.
Our manufacturing facility is utilized to stage and prepare each screen room for installation. While our competitors fabricate their panels in their factory and make them fit at your home with additional receiving channels and hundreds of exposed screws, we service the homeowner and high-end contractors who appreciate our onsite custom framing to exact sizes.

In addition, our screen system is designed to limit the number of exposed screws and brackets. Any visible screws and fasteners are powder coated to the same finish as your room. We are NOT a factory operation – we are a custom screen room provider. We prepare and install one project at a time. Enjoy the benefits of working with The Screen Team®.

Retractable Screen Doors and Windows

Discover the beauty of ClearView Invisible Screen Systems™ for doors and windows.

ClearView™ screens utilize the technology of roll-up blinds, updated and advanced to work vertically or horizontally for both door and window applications.

ClearView™ screens are manufactured with a durable, lightweight aluminum housing that protects the screen material when not in use. Within the housing, the ClearView™ retractable screen is anchored to an aluminum tube with a tension control device. ClearView™ is the only patented invisible screen system utilizing a “Safe-Glide” Speed Reducer™ that insures doors will retract fully without danger of trapped fingers or a “slamming” return.

The patented ClearView™ retractable screen door system will fit your application for single, double French doors and sliding doors. ClearView™ screens provide a superior solution to any product in the market today.

The exclusive, patented "Safe-Glide" Speed Reducer™ is a hydraulically-controlled device that slows the screen return into the housing, assuring frail or small hands are not caught in the screen as it closes. It provides for a smooth retraction that prevents tearing of the material and abrasion of parts. The ClearView Invisible Screen Systems™ is the only brand offering a proven "Safe-Glide" speed reduction system. Others have tried to imitate it, but none have matched ClearView's superior quality and innovative design.

Low maintenance

These systems require minimal maintenance as outlined below.

Track Maintenance:
Clean tracks every one or two months, or as necessary, by wiping clean with a cloth and gentle detergent. Let tracks dry, then apply an even coat of Dry Silicone spray to the top and bottom tracks. Remove excess spray. Dry Silicone spray is available from Hearlands or your local dealer. Do not scrub aluminum parts as this may damage powder-coated surfaces.

Screen Maintenance:
Make sure that the screen is not riding outside of the track. This could cause the screen to bind when rolling back into the housing. To clean the screen, vacuum using an upholstery brush. Carefully vacuum the outside and then from the inside, taking care not to snag the screen itself. Keep pets from clawing or scratching the screen.

Questions and answers about retractable screens

Q: What is a retractable screen door?

A retractable screen door is a home improvement product that is attached to the exterior face or to the interior frame of a doorway. The screening material itself is attached to a roller tube which spins on a vertical axis within the assembly's housing. The screen is also attached to a vertical pull bar which rides on two rails and is used to stretch the screening material across the door opening. Once deployed, the pull bar is fixed in place by one or more magnets installed on the side opposite the housing. When not in use, the screen rolls up into its housing. The system can be installed on virtually any single entry door. Using two complete assemblies, the system can also be easily installed on French doors.

Q: How difficult is it to install a retractable screen door?

The installation of a retractable screen door system is not difficult. However, we must recommend that our systems be installed by a certified installer. Installation time depends on whether the system is prefabricated on site or ordered in a pre-cut kit. The installation of a pre-cut single door typically takes 30 to 45 minutes; pre-cut French doors take an hour to an hour-and-a-half. If a system is fabricated on site, you can expect to spend about a half-hour more.

Q: What door sizes will this system fit?

The system can be installed on practically any single door frame measuring up to 110" in height and 60" in width. French door assemblies which require the installation of two kits can be installed on openings up to 96" wide.

Q: When a dealer or certified installer orders a system they will be installing, what is included?

Whether a system is ordered uncut or precut, each single door assembly kit includes the following:

  • SafeGlide™ Speed Reducer
  • Housing, with extruded “Back-Plate” feature, in specified color
  • Pull bar in specified color
  • Top pull bar guide in specified color
  • Roller tube
  • Magnet assembly in specified color
  • Screening material
  • Handles with screw plugs in specified color
  • Railing (80" or 96") in specified color
  • Top and bottom housing cap with screw plug in specified color
  • Interior tension spring
  • Bottom housing cap with screw plug in specified color
  • Installation screw pack(s)
  • Warranty card
  • Weather stripping
  • When two single doors are ordered for an installation on a French door, the kit can include an extra magnet assembly and custom door pin-locks, which allow the user to lock one of the doors in place while being able to use the other freely.

Q: When a dealer or certified installer orders a system they will be installing, what is NOT included?

The only items not included in the individual kits are sill adapters, Decolum (top molding) and bug flaps. Sill adapters come in seven different shapes, and five colors (gold is anodized). Bug flaps are not included because in certain applications it is not necessary. These items should be ordered as needed.

Q: Why use sill adapters?

Over 90 percent of all installations are custom fitted. The sill adapters provide a seamless blending of the new screen to your existing frame. In a great number of cases, the sill adapter is a necessary component for proper door operation. The sill adapter will not only improve the overall appearance of your new doorway, but serves to prevent damage to the railings that will be installed.

For a natural wood product for decking and railing, we continue to utilize the Ipe species of Brazilian Hardwood in our custom rooms and decks. Ipe is a very dense, insect and rot resistance wood product, with the longevity of the best composite decking products in the market today.

Ipe can be oiled on a regular basis or you can allow the wood to adjust to your environment. Please visit our showroom and compare the benefits of Ipe decking to other wood products.

In addition to Ipe, we also offer Tiger Decking, another species of South American hard wood. This wood is getting more popular as it is more readily available.

All of our decking and railing products are available on an installed and non-installed basis.
