Maintaining Your Stainless-Steel Grill Grates

The importance of cleaning your grill is not only to make sure it is looking good, it is to ensure you are maximizing its life span. Cleaning your grill regularly allows you to know that your grill is in tip top shape and is working properly every time you use it.

Follow these simple steps to ensure you are maximizing your grills life span!

Step 1 – Choosing Your Brush

The quality and the condition of your brush is crucial to cleaning your grill properly. There are three main warning signs that it is time to throw away your brush and purchase a new one:

  1.  The bristles are starting to fall off
  2.  The brush is starting to rust
  3.  Food and/or grease is starting to build up on your brush

If you need to purchase a new brush, know that stainless-steel brushes work best on stainless-steel grills. It is important to choose the correct kind of material of brush so that the life span of your grill is not cut in half. Once you purchase a new brush, make sure to clean the brush after every use – do not let food and grease build up!

Step 2 – The Right Time to Clean Your Grill Grates

Cleaning your grill in not a difficult process – it is one of the easiest parts of grilling. The best time to clean your grill is after you are finished cooking, while it is still hot.

If you forget to do it after, no worries, you can also clean your grill before you cook your next meal on it, while it is preheating.

Step 3 – What to Do If There Are Stubborn Stains

Sometimes you may forget to clean your grill every time, which could cause stains that will not come off with just a brush. If this happens to you, there is a simple trick: tin foil!

Here is what you do:

  1. Lay a piece of tin foil (shiny side down) on top of the stain before you turn on the grill
  2. Heat your grill to 500 degrees Fahrenheit
  3. Remove the foil once the grill is preheated
  4. Scrape the stain with your grill brush

This typically works because the foil will collect steam and moistens the stain under it, which makes it easer to remove.
